If you’re straight, I’ll get you a new Macbook.

12 Jun

A friend on Facebook notified me this evening of a troubling Craigslist ad he came across in Los Angeles.

In the ad, a mom or dad is selling their son’s computer because he wants to get the newest version of the Macbook. They go on to explain that they’re not spoiling their son with this new laptop, quite the contrary-because their son was caught engaging in “homosexual acts,” this was his reward for claiming he would choose to be straight.

I’ve written to the person who placed the ad and it’s quite possible that the ad is a hoax. But if for some reason, this young man’s mother finds me through the blog, I wanted to share two important facts and some helpful resources with her.

1. Being gay is not a choice.

2. 1 out of every 4 teen suicides is a gay teen. Among the leading causes of those suicides is a lack of family acceptance.

Family Acceptance Project will help you find ways to treat your son with the respect and love that he deserves.

Visit the Prayers for Bobby site and learn a little something about a Mom who felt the same way you did, and how she feels now that her son is gone.

Then again, it is the new Macbook…I’d probably tell my parents I was straight too if I was going to get a free Macbook. This also may indeed be a hoax, but having a career in knowing about social media trends, new media and how it’s used– the red flags about the danger a kid may be in outweighed the possible red flags of being embarrassed by a craigslist hoax.

UPDATE:

I did receive a response from the poster and have confirmed an address in the correct location. Their response stated:

“I regret to inform you that I will not be calling you. I don’t need for you or anyone else to have my number. Not after all the hatred and threats I’ve gotten.”

I replied with some helpful information, including some of what I have here in the blog post. I have yet to receive a response.

UPDATE 2:

I’ve now done a great deal of research and this story has now been posted on dozens of other sites so, here’s the story…

You must be new to the internet….

You queers need to stop bitching and understand that your little fascade against your parents isnt the only thing wrong in the country. Grow up. Sure you want rights, but so does the junkie that wants a hit. Red card for the bullshit excuse your born gay, it’s not my fault you hate your father.

    • Anonymous Coward June 13, 2012 at 11:10 pm #

“fascade”? Crusade? Facade? Tirade? Whatever word you’re looking for, “fascade” isn’t it, mostly because it isn’t a word.

    • Steve H. Jobs June 13, 2012 at 11:30 pm #

What is a fascade? And if you meant facade, how can you have a facade against someone? Also, as an aside, though I don’t see the connection, a junkie that wants a hit, provided he is heterosexual, already has all of the rights most gay people are trying to get (Except, of course, for the overlap of gay people who are junkies who want a hit, who presumable want the right to do drugs as well). Not sure where you want to send them away to (As a red card tends to mean ejection), nor where the paternal hatred comes from.

Overall, I’d say if you went to college, said college needs to lose their accreditation. I have disregarded several small mistakes in your post, as we are all human.

First of all, Burt Ferguson: Same sex equality is not equatable to drug use. Drug use is a choice (some necessary but a choice nonetheless) but sexual orientation is not a choice. I think you should grow up before you dare tell anyone else to. I would rather be sober and hang with a “queer” then be around you drinking a beer.

(0/10) Try trolling harder. You need to elaborate the points more and not try to use too many talking points at the same time. Remember you are going for the typical ignorant conservative, angry, old, white, republican type. They usually can’t remember more then the 2 or 3 things they hear on fox news.

Man you will get them cranked up now…Fussy Wussy Alert…Call the Wambulance

  3. ABM June 13, 2012 at 10:54 pm #

A troll, if ever there was one, purely designed to incite the internet hate machine. Who overshares like this even on Craigslist, the hemorrhoidal bunghole of internet bargain hunting? I call massive shenanigans.

    PS: “welcome to Fark”…

    • Jamie McGonnigal June 13, 2012 at 11:09 pm #

and fark seems cool. it just brought me an extra 20,000 hits I wasn’t counting on…

      • Worldwalker June 13, 2012 at 11:15 pm #

Only 20,000? Where are the rest of us?

By the way, ABM, the answer to your question of “who overshares like this?” is “a truly disturbing number of people.” People post things on Facebook for the world to see that I wouldn’t tell my best friend.

        Behold, the Power of Fark.

Welcome to fark from me as well. Glad you got some page hits, but be prepared for an potential infliux of trolls.

“Stop doing things gay people do and I’ll buy you a Mac”

    What?

/Not all Mac users are gay, but all gay people use Macs.

  5. Diego Dominguez June 14, 2012 at 4:10 am #

Oh how little these simple-mnded parents know about the youth culture: a new Macbook isn’t what you buy a confused young man to make him look or act straighter, quite the contrary. I was thinking power tools and a mustang. But not a mustang convertible.
In salt lake city, gayest friendly city in America, (suck it San Fran) for every Macbook Pro I see, I look for signs of homosexuality. Or if they are a hipster.
Honestly, I will take all the authentic gays over the phoney hipsters every time. I respect anyone who makes a bold choice in life, and to be clear, I respect gays for making the bold choice to live their lives openly and without apology according to how they feel, have always felt and against the idealogues, religions and cowards impeding them from listening to their hearts. To the craig’s list son, “it gets better.”

Wow I’ve heard of gay deprogramming camps but buying a computer to bribe a person to hide in the closet is ashame. That mother needs to use the computer to educate herself. She should go to PFLAG and other sites. Thanks for bringing this out. I’ll try to crosspost this to my FB and blog.

  7. Kate June 14, 2012 at 10:02 am #

Greetings from the empire of Fark. That lady is nuts!

    • Travis the Chimp June 14, 2012 at 11:45 am #

I’m kind of on the fence about the sexual orientation argument. I would say in SOME cases, it is most definitely a CHOICE. On the other side of the coin, it’s certainly not NORMAL. We’re not genetically programed to be gay, otherwise none of us would be here. it’s in our genetics to seek the opposite sex. That being said, it’s possible that being “born” gay would just be a genetic mutation or handicap. I try not to be biased, but I would say almost EVERY single “gay” guy I know has at one point had sex with a female and are admittedly attracted to females. Doesn’t sound very “gay” to me aside from the banging dudes in the butts part.

  8. Gay Much? June 14, 2012 at 12:51 pm #

Say and believe what you must but I’m never buying the “I was born this way” BS. Deviant sexual behavior is learned behavior. Want to turn him straight? buy him a hottie a couple times.

  9. sicksouls June 14, 2012 at 3:45 pm #

Wow, you two! The last two post’s… I can not even look at your names due to frustration. One tenth of all mammals are born gay, including humans.(FUCKING WIKI IT MAN)

(ok soooo about to overshare, SO PLEASE SKIP IF YOU ARE THE SENSITIVE TYPE).

I am a straight female that has had sexual relations with 6 females. (being Bi was cool 10 years ago).

I have an amazing BF, he is straight though when he was young he loved watching anal porn. So much so that he started to watch gay porn.

When we met I was an escort, (making 6000$ a month) he decided that he wanted to try to be a male escort, for guys (for the extra money, he went on “Squirt”) He tried and he tried, he took 6 cialis he took Meth. Nothing worked to make his penis work for gay sex.

So despite my boyfriend being able to get off to gay porn and doing my ass all the time, he can not be gay. He so woulda if he COULDA, so if being gay is a choice why couldn’t he choose it for $10,000 a month Mr.You choose to be gay?

So this kid and his computer? Well maybe he just like’s bum holes:) I mean who doesn’t right. MAYBE he is gay, and if that is the case is mother needs to go the north Korean re-education camps cuz I’m not sure anything else can fix her. Maybe there she can be anally raped maybe she’ll like it and give her kid the Mac anyway… cuz being gay is fun, even if your not:)

It is the right of the parent to spend or not spend money as they choose.
